Not too "liberal" for me, but would be for many people.
Religious art brings out strong emotions, as arguably it should. Even relatively traditional work draws considerable opposition - not Protestant enough, not Catholic enough, even not Orthodox enough, and way way not Jewish enough or secular enough. Too Christian or not Christian enough. Too original or not original enough. I've even received hate mail from an iconographer in Russia.
So hang in - but don't be surprised by a bit of rejection! It's built in to good old human nature, and says nothing about the excellent quality of your work, or your insight and inventiveness.
