My art crosses multidisciplinary boundaries spanning painting, sculpture and poetry/text combined with medical documentation and symbolic imagery. I enjoyed collaborating with poet and artist, Steve Scott. I am stretching the parameters of painting and exploring conceptual ideas about the essence of “being” on physical and spiritual levels. I do this through symbols and metaphorical imagery.

Years ago, a bout with cancer, and subsequent healing, piqued my interest in the connection between the natural and spiritual realms. My art grows from the crossover between medicine, science, language, philosophy and spirituality. I view my working process as a type of scientific discovery and metaphysical exploration. I convey this interconnectedness by combining my x-rays, sonograms, and CT scans with referential imagery. Juxtaposed objects, text and signs are re-contextualized in relationship to my medical documentation.

My mixed-media paintings evolve through a process of exploration. Photos, fabric, metal, found objects, natural forms, prints and paint are combined and collaged in a manner that builds a visually complex surface. This surface reveals traces of previous stages of the process—a history of being and a reference to metamorphosis. The layering of paint and objects forms a "skin," physically and symbolically. Light adds an ethereal quality and functions to illuminate transparent films and objects housed in boxes within the composition. I repurpose found items like insects, lizards, fish, shells, pods, flowers and wasp nests as part of the process. I am drawn to such structures that reveal complexity, and for their symbolic meaning. Words, as well as visual forms, affect the content—they modify the images due to their interaction with them. Overall, I am interested in exploring themes of regeneration and restoration through recurring patterns and cycles of life.

Along with insects and plants, bird images are also integral to my work. There is a connection, for me, between bird song and activity, human communication and social interactions. I find the songs of birds a mysterious language that reflects purpose yet is outside my understanding. I draw comparisons to human language and social systems, their composition and deterioration, referencing laws of thermodynamics and entropy. I relate these to the interactions in relationships on a physical as well as spiritual level. My desire is that this visual dialogue will have a healing effect on art and my audience through meaningful, conscious and subconscious, connections.
