Artist / Personal Statement
“Humility and human come from the same Latin word, humus, dirt. A human being is someone, as we are reminded on Ash Wednesday, taken out of the dirt.”
- Richard Rohr

I try to explore an alternative relationship between person and place — a more balanced collaboration of figure and ground where the figure is not dominant. Further, I am interested in the weathered surface of icons and old photographs, by damage that becomes part of the image, a reminder that I’m looking at something that was made, and has endured the suffering and violence of time. As technology “progresses,” dirt is effectively eliminated. The proliferation of clean, retouched photographs, only serve to make us numb consumers. We need the earth, dirt, to heal us. Without it we become evermore disconnected from nature and from our true selves. Good art creates trouble and might help to wake us up.

Press Release:

Greg Halvorsen Schreck employs technological advances in the production of his Lambertian portrait photographs.  A Lambertian photograph is a image that consists entirely of light and shadow.  96 pieces of wood replace pigments, inks and emulsion to construct the photograph.  In the daylight, the wood pieces appear as a carved sculpture; however, a single light source raking across the surface magically reveals a black and white photograph.…
