Artist / Personal Statement
I discovered art as a craft in my mid-twenties when Robert Frank’s, The Americans, gripped my imagination. I studied Frank’s work and other notable street photographers, particularly those photographers associated with “The New York School” of the 1950s. I loved the immediacy of the captured image on the fly, the joining of formal design with a random moment, the glint of meaning in the mundane, the symbolic gesture, the scrappy appearance, and the accumulation of numerous chance encounters to form a cohesive body of work.

My early work reflected this influence. While my newer work utilizes more complicated forms of multiple images and multi-layered, mixed media photo-based collages, elements of this early inspiration seep through almost all my pieces. Whether I’m capturing an ironic scene, portraying Christian concepts of suffering, justice, and sacrifice, or commenting upon the vagaries of our culture, I never drift too far away from the early spark that propelled me toward my devotion to photography as a vehicle for artistic expression.

It's a wonderful piece which my undergraduate students viewed on the screen and found quite challenging.  I had us work with it during our unit on salvation.

Many thanks again for our work,

Cecilia Gonzalez-Andrieu, PhD.

By the way, I love the phrase "...commenting upon the vagaries of our culture.." in your Artist Statement.
