Artist / Personal Statement
I feel most deeply immersed in the presence of God when I am experiencing kairos time during creativity. In Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art, Madeleine L’Engle describes kairos on page 98: “Kairos. Real time. God’s time. The time which breaks through chronos with a shock of joy…In kairos we are completely unselfconscious, and yet… far more real that we can ever be when we are constantly checking our watches for chronological time. The saint in contemplation, lost (discovered) to self in the mind of God is in kairos. The artist at work is in kairos. The child at play…is in kairos. In kairos we become what we are called to be as human beings, co-creators with God, touching on the wonder of creation.” I am most aware of the presence of God when I am most myself: painting, reading, writing, kissing my husband, thinking, observing nature while walking near water and trees, designing… the activities in my life that cause me to lose all track of time. For me, these are the things that illuminate my view of God and heighten my awareness to His presence. I’m not distracted. I’m not aware of my self. I’m right with the world (interacting with it as God intended, a balanced interaction, not overvaluing the World over the Kingdom) and in it with God (communion).
