Artist / Personal Statement
My artwork primarily depicts the familiar landscapes that surround my home and studio. The pond, the big holly tree in the pasture, the hay field and barns are all places I see nearly every day. The mountain waterfall and coastal scenes are beloved summer destinations my family has vacationed at every year since I was a child. Painting is my way of connecting with and honoring the land and my personal history.

Painted on location and in the studio from field studies and reference photos, these images develop through a series of layers. Thin washes are layered underneath thicker applications of oil paint which may be scratched, scraped or scumbled to reveal the colors below. Glazes, which settle into the crevices and brush marks, are applied last, emphasizing texture and enhancing color.

It is the more subtle and poetic depths of life and beauty that I am after, and a connection with the Divine. I believe there is a meaningful, universal visual “language” that we all speak. This visual language transcends the spoken word and is understood because we all share the experience of seeing the world through our eyes. I paint realistically because I want my paintings to communicate clearly with people across time and culture.

I submitted 3 of my current paintings to the 35th National Exhibit at the Kinston NC Community Arts Center.  Valley Hay Field was accepted! My good friend, teacher, and mentor, Robert Way, also submitted 3 works, they were all accepted and one of the paintings won a merit award! Way to go Bob!…

Hi Nancy,
Thank you so much for reaching out to me and commenting on my work. Your work is beautiful and I love what you have written about it.

I have mostly spoken about my work and faith in church settings but plan to do more of it in the future.

I do have an interview that was published of a more general nature .
I am not sure if this link will work because I am on my phone but could send it to you privately.
I see that you are in Greensboro. I am planning on attending the “Breath and Clay” conference and one of my works will be in the Gallery.
