Artist / Personal Statement
I grew up in an Afrikaans Christian family during the apartheid years. I qualified as a Landscape Architect from the University of Pretoria in 1982. As a typical student in the 80’s I questioned and mostly discarded the systems and values of my youth.

In my forties, I enrolled for the Visual Arts degree at the University of South Africa. At this time I read widely on the origins of different religions, and this in turn, led to a renewed interest in the origins of life, creation, systems of belief and worldviews.

In the book 'Darwin’s Black Box' the author Michael J Behe concludes that the process of blood coagulation could not logically have evolved, but that the irreducible complexity of the elements involved in the process point to 'Intelligent Design'. This became the (unpopular) focus of my artmaking at Unisa.

An exploration of what truly constitutes the irreducible beginning of everything led me to John 1:
'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God' .

Thus The Word became my medium of choice. Initially I drew/wrote by hand, but this method was too clumsy to adequately symbolise the complexity found in nature. Digital drawing facilitates a level of intricacy impossible to achieve by hand, and so I started working in Photoshop.

The development of this conceptual focus during 2007 eventually led to an exploration of natural complexity and order from chaos. This has remained the focus of my work.
Accomplishments / CV
Nellien Brewer was born in 1961. She qualified as a Landscape Architect from the University of Pretoria in 1982, and spent the next 20 years in this profession.

Fine arts, however, always remained her first love, and she enrolled for the BVA degree at UNISA which she completed in 2011.
She employs a variety of media in her art-making, but her work has become increasingly computer-based, as this allows a level of detail impossible to achieve by hand.

Her work has been included in a number of group exhibitions and competitions both in South Africa and overseas.
