Artist / Personal Statement
Artist Statement (Milagro Series) Patrick A. Luber

In the Western industrialized world, especially in America, people engage in making visual vernacular expressions of faith from the detritus of material culture. While many people still identify with organized religion, their beliefs have been tempered by the freedoms that democratic governments have provided and the resulting “individualism” valued by people living under these conditions.

While organized religions have prescribed rituals, doctrines, and visual traditions, the manner in which people actually practice and express their faith often differs from institutional doctrine. As such, people live their beliefs through various forms of personalized expressions, outside of, or as an extension of organized religious practices, and in some cases, interpret doctrine in unorthodox ways. This independent and DIY approach to faith and religious expression is embedded in the historic fabric of American culture, and is still very much alive today. What is also embedded in American culture—and American visual culture—is the blending of nationalist pride and religious belief. This idea also has historic roots in the construction of the America identity, beginning with the first colonists that settled on the Atlantic coast.

My work is informed by a variety of vernacular expressions of faith and national identity found within America, however the form of my sculptural reliefs is based upon a type of ex voto commonly known as a milagro (miracle)—a type of personalized prayer offering often used in Catholicism, especially as it practiced in the American Southwest and in various Latin America countries. Historical works of art with Christian themes and images from religious material culture still have the power to inspire, however many ordinary people often take matters into their own hands, creating images and objects to fulfill unmet spiritual needs—or to make sense of religious doctrine by translating them into their specific cultural perspective.

America is a collection of many cultural perspectives, yet “popular culture” seems to unite everyone. In part, the history of art is the history of peoples’ spiritual beliefs and practices. My work continues that tradition using a visual language constructed from popular, consumer, and material culture. Some works explore the visualization of theological doctrines, Biblical narratives or the practice of prayer; while others pursue questions about Christianity and its relationship to the American experiment.

Whatever theme I explore, all are contextualized as a prayer within forms that reference a milagro. In spite of an ever-increasing scientific world, the desire to communicate with god(s) through prayer and ritual continues to hold importance for millions of people around the world. What do people pray for? Has prayer changed in the twenty-first century? What do peoples’ prayers look like? Peoples’ prayers like works of art can be very personalized and idiosyncratic—no two look alike—yet all have the power to express the hopes, dreams, and despair of the big beautiful mess of humanity and its struggle to find meaning.
