Artist / Personal Statement
“To see a world in a grain of sand,/And heaven in a wildflower,/Hold eternity in the palm of your hand,/ And eternity in an hour.” -William Blake
As an artist I am concerned with capturing organic processes and courses of nature, such as birth, farm fields and the ocean, into poetic images that convey emotion. I quest to tap into the symbolism in natural imagery that speaks truth and beauty to humanity. I see the everyday happenings of life and nature as metaphors for truths of our lives. Therefore, my art is a synthesis of natural forms, both figurative and occurring in the natural world, and ideas, which are often inspired by great works of literature.
Stylistically speaking, I believe that simplicity of expression is the most powerful; therefore I strive for an aesthetic that does not overwhelm the eye with unnecessary information. Instead, I attempt to make thoughtful creative decisions that allow the chosen materials, colors and compositional choices to speak to the emotion I wish to convey. As a result, I favor abstract, yet representational art. I view abstraction as a visual means of editing, that allows for me to capitalize upon those parts of the image I find most expressive. Also, given the natural subject matter of my work, I rely a great deal on color for expression.
