Artist / Personal Statement
My work is about giving trash rebirth. The function of the trash material had reached an end, but those very pieces are being reinvented and infused with a new purpose.
The form comes from press molding various plastic waste products. This creates some exciting results such as leaving very industrial-like lines and marks on the pieces. These details are usually overlooked or hidden under paper or labels. However, the point is not to centralize on the “machine” quality of the marks, but rather to allow them to serve only as highlights to a more “human” piece that’s characterized by its individuality and uniqueness.
The body of work is also a metaphor of Christianity’s rebirth/ resurrection. The one-time use plastic bottle’s destiny was to end up in the dumpster. However, now it’s been transformed into an enduring ceramic piece and infused with a new purpose as a valuable vessel that has function as well as being able to appreciate for its artistic value.
