I spent my childhood on the lakes of Minnesota exploring the wilderness in an aluminum boat with a small Evinrude engine.
My imagination crossed the corporeal into an internal world of unfinished stories. It’s this line my paintings seek to delineate; the extraordinary in the ordinary. I am to this day drawn to imagery that is benign, even at times clichéd – trees, unassuming architecture, streetlights, lamp-lit windows….
Our world roils with conflict and irony, while I look for innocence. For me as a painter the crux is where the external meets the internal – where commonplace inspires wonder.
The process begins with unfussy drawing, becoming increasingly meticulous through a meditative painting process attentive to chiaroscuro, craft, design, surface texture, and perspective.
I seek to cross thresholds between the ordinary, the innocent, and the unseen; seeking that everyday place where one must decipher between apprehension and awe.
