Artist / Personal Statement
Art in general is a way of helping to preserve the history and way of life of a culture. It is also a way for people to express the feelings that they sometimes are unable to find the words to describe. There have been several times that I could not share how I felt without creating a picture for the pain was hurt so much. I have found my voice through the story I am trying to portray in picture or group of pictures, as is the case in animation. I have even found some healing through sharing these pictures with people who I trust.

Books and pictures can help us see what happened, but the visual arts like movies, plays, and even cartoons help bring them to life. When we watch a play or a movie we become engaged into the story through emotional connections with characters that we can relate with. Walt Disney, one of the three grandfathers of animation, built his entertainment empire with such memorable characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck. During the second World War, he played a large role helping strengthen moral by giving us cartoons that dealt with the war; sometimes with humor and other times helping us visualize what could be if we let those who saw themselves as supermen were to defeat us.

Today most cartoons are only used for entertainment, but back in the 1990s Phil Vischer created a series of cartoons that many kids and their parents have come to know and love called Veggie Tales, which are mostly designed to teach kids life lessons from the Bible. Like Phil Vischer, I believe that cartoons should be more than just entertainment, but should be used to help pass down the faith next generation.
