Women's image and voice in the Church

Traditionally there have been too few images of women in icons, too few Orthodox women iconographers, and too few Catholic women who teach, or are recognized as female mystics. In light of this historical absence of women in the traditional Byzantine era, there is room today for change and new expression. Page from the book, Women of…See More

ECVA on Line show This Fragile Earth

Three works were selected for an online show with Episcopal Council for the Visual Arts, Curated byKathy Thaden, called This Fragile Earth. The variety of works submitted for the 2018 ECVA Fall Exhibition "This Fragile Earth" is a wonderful reminder of the richness and varied talents of ECVA member artists. It was inspiring for me to look through the entries and I pray that as you view the…See More

Artist / Personal Statement
How do Artists transform ideas into our work?
The question is, how can the work transform me into an idea. Iconographers are always trying to paint what we cannot see. Iconographers live in a twisted dimension: as you paint you theoretically become the image. Internally iconographers believe “beauty will save the world”, the beauty of humankind and our potential to see the divine in all things.
Accomplishments / CV
For 20 years I made money, it was a job and a service. I messed around in plenty of mediums and treated clients honestly. I gave them what I thought they wanted as best and creatively as I could. I said yes to everything and every medium, murals, weaving, furniture, etc. At the age of 40, I was invited to an icon writing workshop with an orthodox priest. That first icon encounter swept me up like a wave. From then on, I was driven to reproduce these ancient images.

I appreciate your comments and am happy to be a friend.  (I am very guilty of not spending as much time on the CIVA site as is ideal.)  I enjoyed seeing your lovely work and your "silent meditative" comments regards aspects of working are also true for me!! You may also like the work of Heidi Petersen, a friend of mine. May God bless you.
