Artist / Personal Statement
North Carolina artist Grace Carol Bomer is an abstract expressionist painter. Her concern is the human condition surprised by the grace of God. Her work combines abstraction and realism, because the visible world and the invisible world are equally real and important. All seeming dichotomies of artistic imaginative work are resolved and hinge upon the Incarnation. “In Christ all things hold together” (Col 1:16). Jesus is both God and man, Spirit and flesh, as well as Word and image. “The philosopher and the artist are close in their loves and in their aims. Both are intimately concerned with seeing things as they are. But art divorced from philosophy becomes an exercise in narcissism. And the language of philosophy all too often becomes a dead husk when it loses its incarnational elements…” (Michael O’Brien, “Chesterton and Paganism,” The Chesterton Review, Aug-Nov 1990).
We live in a postmodern culture, which focuses on the manipulation of words and images where The World Is a Text, is a philosophy which rejects the possibility of any absolute truth. Bomer purposely juxtaposes image and text to create connections and metaphors, integrating word and image to entice the viewer to consider the epic, eternally relevant story of salvation as told in the Scriptures. She embeds layered papers, old texts, and detritus relevant to the piece, and overlays them with translucent beeswax or varnish. Then by making marks, layering, and stripping away, she attempts to find the mystery in a piece and to fathom the mysteries of Creation, Fall, and Redemption, and give meaning to biblical truth of grace and mercy.
Carol is currently represented by MUSE&CO, Roswell, GA, Whitestone Gallery in Philadelphia, and at 140D Roberts Street Studio, Asheville, where
her studio is located.
She is involved locally, nationally, and even internationally, travelling to China in 2006 to teach and speak at Luxan Fine Art Academy in Shenyang, and working with and exhibiting in Kiev, Ukraine, in 2001. In August 2011-13, her work was/is included in ARTE-FE, the first contemporary Christian exhibit in Madrid, Spain, to coincide with the Vatican’s World Youth Rally.
