Artist / Personal Statement
Since 2008 I have focused on socially engaged art through the medium of portraiture. My work finds meaning in the intersection of humility and the sacred, which I continually see in marginalized individuals and recently in my own identity.

I work to create connection and understanding. I take great effort to know the places and individuals I engage with. I hope my central drive toward friendship with subjects cancels out any threat of exploitation. I value connecting people with resources that can serve in conjunction with anything the art brings.

One reason I have stuck to drawing and painting is that there is no immediate capturing of an image. Instead, both the subject and the artist sit with each other for extended periods, in a slow-paced, wonderfully personal space. The medium naturally bridges difference and division.

Posted on October 17, 2011 at 7:49pm 2 Comments

This is Steve. He lives in La Mirada next to Mike's Burgers on Imperial Hwy. There is a vacant field adjacent to the restaurant's parking lot and at the far end of that field is a long, cinder block wall lined with overgrown shrubs and trees. At the right end of this overgrown wall sits a large storage container-- behind and around this spot is where Steve Flath has been living for the past couple years.…
